Hello, again! I‘m going to write several articles about power grid analyser Chauvin Arnoux CA8335. As usual manufacturer‘s manuals are unpractical. Chauvin Arnoux CA 8335 is portable power grid analyser. Analyser is very convenient, you can easy connect it to PC.

Manufacturer’s page: http://www.chauvin-arnoux.com/en/produit/c-a-8335.html

This analyser has several functions:

  1. Instantaneous measurements and vectorial diagrams.
  2. Transient mode.
  3. Trend mode.
  4. Inrush mode.
  5. Measurements of harmonics.
  6. Other measurements.

In this article I‘m going to describe how to record transients in power network.

The sequence of settings:

  1. Powering of analyser.
  2. Connecting voltages and currents leads.
  3. Setting of measurement scheme.
  4. Setting of measrument method.
  5. Setting of „transient mode“.
  6. Setting of date and time.
  7. Connecting scheme of analyser.
  8. Analyser in „transient mode“.
  9. Opening and saving of transient record.

  1. Connecting of voltage and current leads.

It‘s time to connect voltages and currents leads to analyser.

Press „Setting“ button:

A1-8

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select option “Sensors and rations”:

A1-9

Press yellow button below letter „A“ as marked in picture:

A1-10

At this moment currents leads (clamps) are not connected yet:

A1-11

Each current clamp has own color marking: phase A (or L1) – yellow, phase B (or L2) – green, phase C (or L3) – red. Neutral current clamp is marked as blue.

Phase A current clamp:

Socket of current clamp differs from socket of voltage clamp.

Connect phase A curent clamp to socket L1/A:

Now we need to connect voltages A, B, C leads to analyser.

  1. Setting of measurement scheme.

Press „Setting“ button:

A1-22

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select option “ Electrical connection ”:

A1-23

Press „Enter“ button.

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select option “ Electrical connection ” scheme as shown in picture:

  1. Setting of measrument method. Here you can select measurement methot with harmonics or without harmonics.

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select option “Calculation methods ” as shown in picture:

A1-27

Press button  “Enter”.

  1. Setting of „transient mode“.

Voltages and currents settings selecting.

First, we should define wich phases we need to monitor.

Second, we need to set deviation of voltages and currents in these phases.

Press „Setting“ button.

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select option “Transient mode ” as shown in picture:

A1-28

Chauvin Arnoux CA8335

Press button „Enter“ to enter in this mode.

First, we are going to set voltages settings. Press yellow button bellow letter „V“:

A1-29

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select for option “ Threshold set-up ” value 4 V. Threshold set-up=4 V, means that analyser will monitor deviation of voltages in all phases (L1, L2, L3). If you will define “threshold set-up”=1 V, then analyser will be going to monitor deviation in one phase, if “threshold set-up”=2 V, analyser will monitor deviation in to phases.

Now we nee to set how big deviation of voltages in phases should be. When this setting will be reached, analyser will record this transient.

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select „1-2-3-N“ (here 1 is L1 phase, 2 – L2 phase, 3 – L3 phase, N- neutral). Press button „Enter“. Set 5 V: when in any phases deviation of voltage will be greater than 5 volts, analyser will record transient.

A1-30

Setting of voltages in transient mode is completed.

Now we need to set current parameters.

Press yellow button bellow letter „A“:

A1-31

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select for option “ Threshold set-up ” value 4 A. Threshold set-up=4 A, means that analyser will monitor deviation of currents in all phases (L1, L2, L3). If you will define “threshold set-up”=1 A, then analyser will be going to monitor deviation in one phase, if “threshold set-up”=2 A, analyser will monitor deviation in to phases.

Now we nee to set how big deviation of currents in phases should be. When this setting will be reached, analyser will record this transient.

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select „1-2-3-N“ (here 1 is L1 phase, 2 – L2 phase, 3 – L3 phase, N- neutral). Press button „Enter“. Set 2 A: if in any phases deviation of currents will be greater than 2 A, analyser will record this transient.

A1-32

Setting of “Transient mode” is completed.

  1. Date and time setting.

We need to set date and time:

Press button „Settings.

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select „Date/Time“.

Press button „Enter“.

Set correct date and time.

Press button „Enter“.

  1. Connecting scheme of analyser.

This scheme is shown in picture:

A1-33

You should pay atention that direction of current clamp should be the same as flowing current direction in phase.

A1-34

If these directions will be oposite, measurements of currents will be not correct (current will be shifted by180°).

  1. Analyser Chauvin Arnoux CA 8335 in „transient mode“.

Here we are going to start analyser in „transient mode“.

Press button „transient mode“ as shown in picture:

A1-35

By using „up“, „down“ buttons select option „transient“:

A1-36

Press button „Enter.

In opened window „Transient list“  press yellow button bellow catalogue icon:

A1-37

In „Detection schedule“ window by using buttons „up“, „down“, „to left“, „to right“ define start / stop date and time:

A1-38

In option „Count“ you can select how many records to record in defined time interval. Set „Count“=10.

Define record name at option „Series name“.

Final settings of „transient mode“:

A1-39

After defining settings of „transiend mode“ press yellow button bellow disk icon:

A1-40

At the same time diskette icon begin to blinking:

If in power network will appear transients, analyser Chauvin Arnoux CA 8335 will be able to record 10 records (because we have set parameter „Count“ to 10).

  1. Opening and saving of transient record.

Now we need to open recorded transient.

The are two ways:

  1. Transient can be opened by analyser.
  2. Transient can be opened with software by  connecting PC to analyser.

Opening transient by analyser.

Press yellow button bellow „Catalogue“ icon:
