REF630 PLC is designed and produced by company ABB. This PLC exchanged older series PLC’s REF541/543/545. REF630 PLC is used mainly for protection of incoming cubicles, sectional cubicles, voltage transformers, feeders, capacitor banks and so on. This PLC is also used in automatic schemes: automatic transfer scheme (ATS), under frequency load shedding (UFLS) and so on.

In maintenance it is convenient to use on-line mode of PLC REF630. In on-line mode you can explore status of binary inputs, binary outputs, also status of internal signals and interlockings. It is very usefull function at searching failures in schemes. PLC REF630 is configuring by using software PCM600. FBD programming language is used to configuring PLC REF630. PLC REF630 has also disturbance recorder and event list.

In this article we are going to read existing configuration, event list, records of distrubance recorder from PLC REF630 by using PCM600 ver.2.8 sowftware in Windows 10 operating system.

  1. Reading communication settings of PLC REF630.

REF630 PLC is configuring by using PC. Therefore you need to connect PLC to PC by using communication cable. The connection between PLC and PC will successfully be established when we set correct communication settings of Windows 10 operating system: these settings are „IP address“ and „Subnet mask“. These settings of PLC REF630 are set by manufacturer ABB and are not editable. So we need first to read communication settings of PLC REF630 on HMI by manual operation and then to set these communication settings to Windows 10 operating system.

Front port address of PLC REF630 is 192.168.0.254, therefore we are going to use IP address, fo example 192.168.0.253 in PC. These IP addresses must be differrent. „IP mask“ = 255.255.255.0, the same IP mask we’re going to enter for Windows 10 (parameter “Subnet mask”).

Select „Network“ icon on desktop and by pressing on right mouse button select „Properties“:

3. Connecting PLC REF630 to PC and testing connection between them.

We‘re going to connect PLC REF630 to PC by using ethernet communication cable:

Now we need to test connection between PC and PLC REF630.

Enter command „ping“ and IP adress of PLC REF630 „192.168.0.254“. Press button „Enter“:

Connection between PLC REF630 and PC is succesfully established. Received data prove us this fact:

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.254:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)

We sent four data packets from PC to PLC REF630 and received all data packets back to PC from PLC REF630. Lost data is 0%.

Next step – creating project of PLC REF630 in PCM600 application.

 

4. Creating project in PCM600 for PLC REF630.

On window „REF630 – Configuration Mode Selection Page“ we schould decide in which mode we‘re going to work. Pick „Online configuration“ mode, because you don‘t have configuration file of PLC REF630 yet. We are going to read this file from PLC REF630.

Select „Online configuration“ and press „Next“:

On window „REF630 – IEC61850 communication protocol“ select „Front port“. This port will be used because we have connected communication cable to them (see figure 21). Enter IP address of PLC REF630 192.168.0.254 (this IP is defined by manufacturer to PLC REF630, see figure 8).

Press button „Scan“ to read order code of REF630. order code show us various charachteristic of REF630: types of protections, communication protocols, number of binary inputs and outputs.

In the figure 41 it is clear that PLC REF630 is used to protect feeder (Main application = F, Feeder protection and control).

On window „REF630 – Setup Complete Page“ press button „Finish“.

Project of PLC REF630 is created. Now we need to read existing internal configuration and settings from IED REF630.

The configuration is empty at this moment (see option „Application Configuration“ in project‘s tree):

5. Verifying technical key.

After creating project we need to check versions of projects of PCM600 application and PLC REF630. Technical keys show us either these versions are the same or differ. These technical keys must be same otherwise we coudn‘t read configuration from REF630. if technical keys differ you must enter your new defined tehnical key (enter this key in folder „User-defined Technical Key“) and press button „OK“. This new technical key will be given to PCM600 and PLC REF630.

In project‘s tree select REF630 and by pressing right mouse button select „Set Technical Key“:

6. Reading existing configuration and settings from PLC REF630.

First you schould read existing configuration from REF630 and then read settings of protections. Mark „REF630“ on project tree and by pressing right mouse button select „Read from IED“:

Application configuration consists of 11 sheets: „BI_DR“, „BO_TRP“, „BAY“, „FIXED“, „QA“, „U_PROT“, „I_PROT“, „OTHER“, „MEASURING“, „LED“, „IEC103“.

Configuration of REF630 is downloaded. Now we are going to read settings of funcion block PHIPTOC (overcurrent protection instantenous stage, see RE_630_technical manual). Select „Application Configuration“ on project‘s tree and by pressing on right mouse button select „Parameter Setting“:

Overcurrent instant stage starts at 12xpu=12x5A=60A and tripping time of this protection is 0,05 sec.

In this way you can read any settings of protections. The configuration and settings of PLC REF630 are successfully readed.

Save file by selecting „File-Save“.

 

7. Reading event list from PLC REF630.

Select „REF630 16 31“ on project‘s tree and by pressing right mouse button select „Event viewer“:

Save downloaded event list by selecting „File-Save“. After downloading and saving of event list, later you can explore this event list in PCM600 application. You don‘t need each time to connect to PLC REF630 to explore this event list of PLC REF630. After occuring new events, you can download these new events by connecting to PLC REF630.

 

8. Reading and saving records of disturbance recorder from PLC REF630.
