RET521 differential protection is used to protect power transformer. ABB company produced these terminals. At this moment newer version of differential protection is terminal RET670.
CAP540 software is used to configure terminal RET521. By using CAP540 software you can read existing configuration from differential protection RET521. Also you can read disturbance recordings and events list from this terminal. We are going to install CAP540 software in Windows XP operating system.
Sequence of article:
- CAP540 software installation.
- Creating CAP540 project for differential protection RET521.
- Setting communication parameters of PC and terminal RET521, connecting PC to terminal RET521.
- Reading disturbance recorder and event list of differential protection RET521
- Opening and saving disturbance recorders record of differential protection RET521.
- CAP540 software installation.
We are going to install CAP540 software version 1.3:

2. Creating CAP540 project for differential protection RET521.
Run CAP540 as shown in the picture below:

Fig.11
In opened window type user name and password. Press button “OK”:

Fig.12
Now we have empty project window:

3. Setting communication parameters of PC and terminal RET521, connecting PC to terminal RET521.
PC communication parameters should be equal to RET521 terminal communication setings. Now we are going to check PC communication settings.
After selecting icon „My Computer“ on Windows XP desktop press „Properties“:

Fig.19
In opened window “System Properties” select option “Hardware” and press button “Device Manager”:

In opened window “Communication Port (COM1) Properties” select option “Port Settings”:

Fig.22
Set communication parameters as shown in the picture 22.
Now we need to set same parameters in RET521 terminal.
Setting communication RET521 terminal parameters:
- Press button “E”.
- Select option “Configuration” by pressing button “to down”.
- Press button “E” to enter “Configuration” option.
- Select option „SPACom“ by pressing button “to down”.
- Press button “E” to enter „SPACom“ option.
- Select option „Front“ by pressing button “to down”.
- Press button “E” to enter „Front“ option.
- Set RET521 communication parameters as shown in the picture 22.
- To confirm changed communication parameters press button “E”.
- By pressing button “C” return to main menu.
4. Reading disturbance recorder and event list of differential protection RET521.
To connect to RET521 terminal we need special optical ABB cable:

Fig.23
Connect this cable to terminal RET521.
Next step – reading disturbance recorder of terminal RET521.
In software CAP540 press “Terminal Disturbance Handling – Terminal Disturbance List” as shown in the picture:

Fig.24
In window ““Disturbance Records List” we have records list of disturbance recorder:

Fig.25
Here:
- „Date“ – recording date of record
- „Time“ – recording time of record
- „Trig signal“ – tripping signal of disturbance recorder (which signal start disturbance recorder)
5. Opening and saving disturbance recorders record of differential protection RET521.
To open record double click on it by left side mouse button (see record recorded at 200910 in the list):

Fig.26
Opened record recorded at 200910:

Fig.27
By using application “REVAL- Disturbance evaluator” we can explore recorded disturbances. Application “REVAL- Disturbance evaluator” is installing automatically with software CAP540.
Close “REVAL- Disturbance evaluator” by selecting “File-Exit”.
In disturbance list select record recorded at 200910 08:41:05.971:

Fig.28
Here we can explore data on windows „Analog channels“, „Digital channels“, „Events“.
In window „Analog channels“ we can explore currents magnitudes and phases. In window „Digital channels“ are shown various signals states at recording time.
In window „Events“ are shown various events. 5th event „DIFFTRIPP“ activated at 201009, time 08:41:05.971. 6th event „DIFFRESTRAIN“ activated at 201009, time 08:41:05.971 and says that tripped differential restrain stage.
Exploring disturbance records are more convenient by using ABB software „Wavewin“. Application „Wavewin” is installing automatically with ABB software PCM600. Analogue Siemens application is “SIGRA 4”.
How to install software PCM600 read here.
Application „Wavewin” opens “comtrade“ format files (*.cfg).
Now we are going to save readed record as “comtrade“ format file. We are going to open this file with application „Wavewin” later.
To open record double click on it by left side mouse button (see figure 26).
In application “REVAL- Disturbance evaluator” press menu “File” and select “Save As”:

Fig.29
In window „Save As“ type file name as „Disturb1“ and select file type as „comtrade (*.cfg)”. After selecting file saving directory press button “OK” to save comtrade file:
