Here I‘ll describe how to configure indication of circuit breaker, truck and earth switch. All these configurations will be done in program unit „Control“ (in project configuration tree). In this article I’m going to use function blocks  COCB (control and position indication of circuit breaker) and COIND (indications of truck, earth switch positions).

About function blocks COCB and COIND you can read in manufacturer‘s ABB manuals „COCB_ Circuit Breaker (2 state inputs 2 control inputs) 1MRS752348-MUM“ and in „COIND_ Object Indication (2 state inputs) 1MRS752351-MUM“.

1. Principle scheme of PLC REF543.

First we should to decide wich binary inputs we need to use to indicate positions of circuit breaker, truck and earth switch.
In figure is shown principle scheme of PLC REF543:

What is purpose of binary inputs? These inputs can assert to states: logical „1“ („high“ level or there is voltage on input) and logical „0“ („low“ level or there is not voltage on input). For example, switch S3 is using for indication positions of truck and is connected to binary input BIO1_5_BI3. When truck is in „test“ position, normal closed (NC) contact of switch S3 is closed and binary input BIO1_5_BI3 is activated. At the same time normal open contact (NO) of switch S3 is opened (this NO contact is used to indicate „working“ position of truck and is connected to binary input BIO1_5_BI4). When truck will be drawn from „test“ to „working“ position, binary input BIO1_5_BI4 will be activated, at the same time binary input BIO1_5_BI3 will be deactivated. We will use these binary inputs‘ states for indication configuration.

We also will use binary inputs to indicate circuit breaker‘s and earth switch‘s positions.
Binary input BIO1_5_BI2 will be used to indicate „closed“ circuit breaker‘s position, BIO1_5_BI1 – to indicate „opened“ circuit breaker‘s position.
To indicate „closed“ earth switch‘s position we use binary input BIO1_5_BI6, to indicate „opened“ position – BIO1_5_BI5.

Circuit breaker is equipment which connect or disconnect for example power transformer, motor, capacitor bank, cable to/from middle voltage (MV)/ high voltage (HV) network.

Circuit breaker truck can be withdrawn to „working“ or „test“ position. For maintenance works this truck will be always withdrawn to test position. This will be always done for safety reasons.

Earth switch is equipment which ground power transformer, motor, cable to secure working personal while maintenance inspections.

Table illustrate binary inputs‘ states:

From table we can see that there can be undefined positions: for example the case when both binary inputs BIO1_5_BI1 and BIO1_5_BI2 are activated or in case when both binary inputs BIO1_5_BI1 and BIO1_5_BI2 have low levels (are not activated). In these cases PLC REF543 will show undefined positions (will be shown question-marks on PLC‘s HMI).

We can find from manufacturer‘s ABB manual „Feeder Terminal REF54_ Technical Reference Manual General 1MRS750527-MUM“ that there are binary inputs PS1_4_BI1÷ PS1_4_BI4, BIO1_5_BI1 ÷ BIO1_5_BI12 and BIO2_7_BI1 ÷ BIO2_7_BI10.

In name BIO1_5_BI1 abbreviation „BI“ means binary input. In this way you can understand where binary inputs are.

 

 

In posterior articles I‘ll describe what is binary outputs, internal failure output, trip circuit supervision.

Now I‘m going to configure indications positions of circuit breaker, truck, earth switch .

2. Open „Relay Configuration Tool“ tool:

3. The configuration works will be done in program unit „Control“ in project configuration tree. Open program unit „Control“:

The principle of configuration is the same as in article no.7 „Measurements configuration with CAP505“. First you need to insert function blocks, then create variables and finally create connections between them.

 

4. Insert circuit breaker‘s control and indication function block COCB:

Binary input BIO1_5_BI2 will be used to indicate „closed“ circuit breaker‘s position, BIO1_5_BI1 – to indicate „opened“ circuit breaker‘s position (see particle 1 of this article).

Connect binary input BIO1_5_BI2 to BINOPEN of function block COCB1. Input BINOPEN when is in „high“ level indicates that circuit breaker is in opened position. Input BINCLOSE when is activate, indicates that circuit breaker is in closed position, so connect binary input BIO1_5_BI1 to input BINCLOSE.

Variables BIO1_5_BI1IV, BIO1_5_BI2IV are blocking binary inputs BIO1_5_BI1I and BIO1_5_BI12 when they are activated.

Parameter „Input osc. level“ (it can be set in „Relay Setting Tool“ tool):

If state of binary input BIO1_5_BI1 is changing more than 50 times per second, the variable BIO1_5_BI1IV is activated and binary input BIO1_5_BI1 is blocking. Analogue working principle is for variable BIO1_5_BI2IV.

Variables BIO1_5_BI1Time and BIO1_5_BI2Time are fixing how long is circuit breaker in „closed“ or „opened“ position. This is using for debouncing mechanical switches. Parameters „Input 1“ and „Input 2“ (their are defined in „Relay Setting tool“ application) are set as time filters for debouncing mechanical circuit breaker‘s auxilaries switches. Parameter „Input1“ is associated with variable BIO1_5_BI1Time, parameter „Input2“ – with BIO1_5_BI2Time. For example parameter „Input1“ is set to 5 ms. We use binary input BIO1_5_BI1 to indicate „opened“ circuit breaker‘s position. When circuit breaker is tripping, it‘s position is changing from „closed“ to „opened“ position so to assert stable „opened“ circuit breaker‘s position there should elapsed 5 ms.

Don‘t change anything in these windows. We leave manufacturer‘s settings of function blocks COCB1, COIND1, COIND2 and COIND3.

 

23. Close „Relay Setting Tool“ application by selecting „File>Exit“.
